Tribute to Dr. John Maxwell

Dr. John Maxwell, former Vice-President of IASSW, passed away on August 1, 2022, in his home country of Jamaica. John served as the first President of the North American and
Caribbean Association of Schools of Social Work (NACASSW) and was simultaneously a Vice-President of the IASSW (1992-1996). John was Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston Jamaica. During his long tenure at UWI he also served as Deputy Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. John was a major figure in Caribbean social work education for decades. He played a leading role in expansion of social work education in the region, initiation of a biennial regional conference of social work, the founding of the Association of Caribbean Social Work Educators, and the launch of a journal, the Caribbean Journal of Social Work. He was also involved in other international research and exchange projects in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Zimbabwe. For his significant contributions to social work education regionally and internationally, John received the IASSW’s Katherine A. Kendall Award in 2002.

Peta-Anne Baker from University of the West Indies stated “Dr. John A. Maxwell, retired Snr Lecturer in Social Work at the UWI @UWImona made his transition on August 1, 2022. Dr Maxwell is the final member of the generation which established professional social work and social work education in the Caribbean. John Maxwell’s career began at Boys’ Town Jamaica. He dedicated most of his professional life to developing the social work prog at the UWI, leading the formation of national & regional #socialwork & SW educator orgs & extending Caribbean social work relationships around the globe”
